Patience Newsom is a 24-year-old artist from Plano, Texas. She graduated from Angelo State University in 2023, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a focus on Painting and Drawing. Newsom boasts a large body of work for someone her age. Much of it is acrylic on wood or canvas, but she has experimented with a wide variety of artistic mediums both in 3D space and on the 2D picture plane.
Inspired by her own ancestry, Newsom has spent much of her life studying American history from the pre-colonial days to the modern era, even sometimes dipping into her estimations of what our future may be like. This is evident in her artworks: she constructs meaningful and often elaborate narratives rooted in real historical events, which she portrays in many of her paintings and sculptures.
Her works in American Tall Tales touch on several important aspects of our history– the underground railroad, the American Revolution, and the push for women’s rights in the United States, to name a few– to express her nuanced thoughts about past events, whether they come from a place of criticism, admiration, or a mix of both.
American Tall Tales will be Newsom’s very first public solo exhibition. In honor of this milestone, 517 Gallery will open at 10 or 11 a.m. and remain open until 5 p.m, or even later during the block party & reception on the 10th & 12th respectively, for the entire week of April 7-13th. Visitors to Denison and locals alike are invited to make the trip to 517 Gallery and see the show while they can!
