Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs About Materials

Participants will be provided the following basic materials for the preliminary construction of their puppets:

Paper Mache paste, newspaper, puppet frame and arms, various tools, tape, wood glue, and wire.

Any materials including paints, clothing, decoration, and other accessories are the responsibility of the participants.

While our puppets are traditionally made using paper mache; participants are welcome to explore other mediums in their construction. Participants are encouraged to inform the instructors if they are planning to explore other methods.

A majority of materials used by the Giant Puppet Workshop are non-hazardous and safe. Any materials that are an inhalant risk, fire hazard, release an unpleasant odor, or require PPE, must be brought to the attention of instructors prior to use.

Depending on quantity of materials and available space; participants are welcome to leave their work at the workshop location during the duration of the event. Upon the workshop completion, all materials and participant work are to be removed from location. Any materials or work left behind may be subject to cannibalization or disposal.

Workshop Etiquette

** All participants are expected to maintain a courteous and work-driven ethic. Offensive and obscene behavior will not be tolerated and may result in dismissal of participation. **

While attendance is documented and encouraged, participants are not required to attend every workshop. Instructors will diligently answer questions and monitor your progress to ensure that you complete your project in a timely manner. We also encourage that you take time outside of the workshop to complete your puppet.

We expect and enforce cleanliness during our presence in the sponsored location. All participants are required to maintain the integrity of the workspace. Examples include, but are not limited to: wiping down tables, putting away used materials, returning tools, properly disposing waste and garbage, and neatly storing any belongings.

Participants may bring small snacks or drinks but keep in mind that there are paints and other inedible materials in close proximity. To avoid accidently ingesting material, please refrain from eating in close contact to your work and ensure your trash is promptly disposed of.

Costs

Our fee covers (1) Puppet per fee. For example: If three participants wish to work together on 1 puppet, the fee would be $100. Our fee covers the cost of building the puppet frame and materials.

DAC will only cover costs for basic puppet construction and instructor aid. All decorative materials such as paints, props, and clothing will be at the expense of the participant.

Puppet Ownership

If the participant is unable to navigate their puppet; they must inform the instructors and provide contact information for their designated navigator. The placement of puppets during the parade is dependent on having a complete inventory and roster of participants.

Participants are welcome to take home their work; however the puppet frame, backpack, hardware, and arms are property of DAC. Participants are welcome to return in future events and be assigned a frame.

Any puppets that are donated or left behind may be subject to reutilization, cannibalization, or disposal. Once ownership of the puppet is relinquished to DAC, the previous owner will no longer have influence over any changes made.Any puppets that are donated or left behind may be subject to reutilization, cannibalization, or disposal. If storage is a concern for any participants who wish to keep their puppets and return for future events; DAC may consider storing certain puppets only after approval of DAC board members. Instructors will reasonably attempt to contact original creators in the following year for confirmation of their willingness to return. In the absence of a response of the original creator, the puppet in question may be subject to reutilization, cannibalization, or disposal.
