Mark Nagel - Sparrows Art Gallery

By: Jennifer Branson

Starting and growing a business takes a lot of hard work, and entrepreneurs who stay focused on their goals are more likely to succeed. Sparrows Gallery is a great example of this dedication. The gallery has shown steady growth and change since it began. It started in a space that was 1,500 square feet on Main Street in Downtown Denison. Now it has expanded to a larger area of 6,000 square feet, which allows for more display room for its diverse collection of artwork. Mark Nagel, who is well-experienced in paint sales and picture framing, has been an important part of the gallery’s success. His knowledge and love for art have helped make Sparrows Gallery a top spot for art lovers.

Sparrows Gallery was founded in 2015 by Tamie Odom. It opened in Downtown Denison when the right building became available, allowing Tamie to fulfill her long-time dream of starting an art gallery. A successful artist herself, Tamie’s passion for creativity translated into developing a truly special art experience. Mark’s background in the paint business and 39 years of experience in picture framing helped Sparrows Gallery succeed.

After a few years, Tamie decided to retire in 2022 to spend more time with her family in Georgia. Mark, who remained committed, kept working to grow Sparrows Gallery. He teamed up with Knight Furniture, which allowed the gallery to expand even more and continue being an important part of the community. Through this partnership, Sparrows Gallery has successfully brought its art collection to the Sherman Knight Furniture location. They are about to expand to the Gainesville Knight Furniture location.

Mark describes Sparrows as a traditional art gallery that features a wide range of works from 32 talented artists. The gallery focuses on quality and craftsmanship, showcasing various artistic styles and techniques. Mark also offers custom picture framing services, using over 39 years of experience to deliver great results at competitive prices. Additionally, the gallery provides art classes in different mediums, encouraging creativity and skill development in the community. To keep up with the growing interest in art, Mark has added more classes and supplies. He regularly arranges gallery shows and events, giving artists and visitors the chance to connect and enjoy the beauty of art.

Sparrows Gallery is one of the largest galleries between Dallas and Oklahoma City. It represents a diverse mix of local, national and international artists, displaying a rich variety of creative works. Committed to supporting artistic growth and community involvement, Sparrows Gallery is an active member of the Chamber of Commerce and participates on the board of the Denison Arts Council. Mark added, “We are a Christian business, our name comes from Matthew 10, and while the world may not know some of our artists yet, their Father does.”

As every business owner knows, businesses face challenges. Mark’s hard work and commitment have created new opportunities, built resilience, and sparked creativity. He is an example of how focusing on potential solutions can help overcome obstacles. Mark pointed out that the art business is particularly tough because it has many inherent difficulties. “There are relatively few brick and mortar galleries in the country. It takes a lot of work, staying involved and connected in the community, and going above and beyond expectations. We have grown in size, even through difficult times.” Dedication to one’s business in the face of challenges is vital to entrepreneurship. It involves a deep commitment to one’s business in good and bad times. This dedication often translates into long hours, sacrifices, and a willingness to partner with one’s community to achieve success.

In true symbiotic fashion, small businesses need community support, and communities need small businesses. Businesses like Sparrow’s Gallery help the community by sponsoring events and improving the quality of life for everyone. This makes neighborhoods better and strengthens the connections between people. Mark believes that small businesses are essential to American retail because they help the economy and add to the culture of communities. Locally owned businesses not only provide financial support but also take part in local events and meet community needs. They show how dedicated they are to the well-being of their area. Unlike big chain stores, small businesses offer unique shopping experiences that are important for the character and authenticity of cultural arts districts. The creativity and craftsmanship found in small businesses make the environment more interesting and culturally rich for both residents and visitors.

Mark emphasized that being focused and committed is very important for new entrepreneurs. “If you are an entrepreneur just starting out  you have to be just a little crazy. There are ways to make more money with less effort. So do it because you love it, because it’s your passion.” Entrepreneurs who are driven by their passion tend to keep going no matter how tough things get. They are more likely to come up with new ideas and create businesses that reflect their values and dreams.

The expected growth in North Texas offers great opportunities for Mark’s business. Many different kinds of people are moving to the area, which will likely lead to a higher demand for art, framing, and furniture services. Both Sparrows Gallery and Knight Furniture are well-positioned to capitalize on this growth by meeting the evolving needs and preferences of the new residents. Sparrows Gallery maintains a carefully selected collection of art and framing services, and Knight Furniture sells various pieces that provide solutions for both aesthetics and function.

As for future events, Sparrows Gallery is planning an event on October 25, 2024 called the “Out West Show.” This special event will showcase exciting Western art and feature lively country music and dancing. Along with the art and entertainment, there will be food and drinks available. The money raised from the Out West Show will go to the Deering family, who recently faced a great loss. Officer William Allan Deering, who bravely fought leukemia, recently passed away. This charitable event is to support Officer Deering’s family —  his wife Vanessa, and his children, Michael, Kaylee, and Bryce. This special occasion is a wonderful example of how small businesses make huge differences in their communities.
