Have you ever dreamed of drawing your own comic or developing your own video game? Do you have big ideas? How about a love for characters and storytelling? A creative project you need feedback on? If so, we’d love to have you join Denison Sequential Arts!

Denison Sequential Arts is a club for teens and adults who love art, comics, games, and animation. We have new activities every Saturday, from beginner-friendly workshops and guest lectures to multi-session group projects. Bring your sketchbook or borrow our materials & explore all kinds of approaches to the art of storytelling.

What is Sequential Art?

“Sequential Art” is a term coined by comic artist Will Eisner to describe visuals arranged in a sequence to tell a story.

That encompasses comics, graphic novels, animation, storyboards, and countless other practices– take your pick!

Meetings take place every Saturday from 1-3 p.m. Come to every meeting or just the ones that interest you– no signup required!

Join any time! Activities may not be suitable for children under 14.

Meeting structure

Each Denison Sequential Arts meeting follows a structure designed to help visual and literary artists develop their skillsets. Meetings are designed to encourage, but not force, socialization & open discussion between creatives.

1:00-1:30

Warmup

A warmup activity such as gesture drawing or free writing will be provided. Generally, two options will be available: one focused on drawing, the other on writing. Please bring your sketchbook or notebook.

1:30-1:35

Announcements

The group coordinator will share any updates on upcoming art exhibitions/opportunities, local events, upcoming deadlines, schedule changes, or group project progress.

1:35-1:50

Open Workshop

Attendees will have the floor to share any updates on personal work or projects they’re developing. You can also request constructive critique! Artists/authors can put in a request ahead of time to use this entire section as a group critique for something they need feedback on or a “popcorn”/round robin reading of their work. Requests must be made at least 1 week prior.

1:50-2:50

Main Activity

We’ll work on the activity listed on the yearly calendar (seen above). This could include but is not limited to guest lectures, open discussions, comic or zine creation, or focused studies. Authors and illustrators are encouraged but not required to work in groups or pairs for some of these activities.

2:50-3:00

Stickers!

Attendees will each get to pick a free DIY-ed sticker to take home, and they’ll have 10 minutes to doodle stickers to be digitized & handed out in the future.
